Dear Friends and Family
Change is hard. Institutional change is extremely tough. Change only comes about when those who make up an institution understand that the survival and strength of the institution is dependent on making that change. Many of you are ready for that change. But the institution that is the political party I was born and raised in, has some growing pain with regards to change.
Those who want change will continue to innovative in hopes of achieving the goals of change we have set. Although this is the perfect moment for change, the exact change we need won’t occur.
Due to my on going health issues and the pregnancy of my wife I am suspending my U.S. Senate campaign and focusing on more pressing matters.
I make this decision after careful qualitative and quantitative analysis. I know that the way that a democrat can win a state wide election is by not being an elected career politician and that the public would vote for a democrat that has or does work as a rural public educator and then that person would need to raise $3,000,000. Our analysis shows that anyone else would need to raise $10,000,000. But like many things, people vote with their pocket book before they vote at the ballot box. And in the Democratic Party fundraising race, Jenny Wilson has won.
To that end, I would say to any other democratic US Senate candidate that it is time to get out of the race and let Jenny Wilson run with no inter party convention or primary fights.
I could stay in the race, be the “protest vote”, and hurt the shot of the eventual democratic nominee, and there by waste resources (energy, time, money, etc.) of my family, friends and supporters. I don’t think that is fair to anyone.
Regardless of all other factors, Jenny Wilson is heads and tails above any of Utahs representatives in D.C. and we should coalesce around her.
Though the time isn’t right as of now, I will run again.
I have enjoyed my time going around the state and meeting so many great people.
I wanted to tell all my new friends how blessed I feel to have met you through this process. My new friends are many, but I am especially thankful for the friendships and advice that Margarita, Sarah, Moroni, and Carol all gave!
To the other (current and past) democratic opponents I am glad to have run along side you! James, I am excited to see what your political future holds. Mitch, you have a great head on your shoulders and I know you will be a great asset to the Democratic Party!
To my staff (Lauren, Chris, Jessica, Lehi, and Justin) thank you for all you have done. To Kevin my campaign manager, you really stepped up and under any other circumstances would have have put the campaign in position to win.
To my wife, I love you, and I can’t wait to help you this last little stretch before our daughter is born. To my son Maurice, thank you for being my motivation!
I love each and everyone of you! I plan on running again in the near future. I hope you will continue to support me as I prepare for that endeavor! Please watch for it on my Facebook page and as well as my website: DrewForUtah.com
Sincerely your friend,
